(¸.•´ (¸.•´• Vintage Guardian Angel and St. Anne Medal

A winged angel leading his ward to safety is magnificently captured in this lovely bright medal designed by famous French engraver Ludovic Penin from Lyon. The scene is set against a background embellished all around with delicate granulation work that forms tiny crosses and presented in barbed quatrefoil filled with minute stars.

On the reverse is an image of St. Anne seated on a Gothic throne chair under a spectacular canopy. St. Anne appears to be explaining something to young Mary who reads from an open book resting on her mother's lap. The field is beautifully textured with tiny raised fleur-de-lis. In a scrolled banner round the foot is the Latin inscription S. ANNA MATER MARIAE VIRGINIS GENITRICIS DEI P.N. (SAINT ANNE, MOTHER OF THE VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF GOD).

The medal, in gilded metal and circular in shape, is signed on both sides by "L. Penin Lyon." The Penins from Lyons, France were a prolific family of medallists.

I am dating this medal circa 1900-1909. It measures 1 1/4" wide x 1 1/2" tall with the top loop but not including the bail that slips into the chain.
