Story Tiles

Story Tiles are a combination of my Dog Story photographs and my dog sculpture. I have never been satisfied with my drawings or paintings. The tiles allow me to make three dimensional drawings that can be retailer hung on the wall or placed on a bookcase. Since the tiles are not glazed they should remain indoors.

I start by rolling out a slab of clay and placing a drawing or photograph on the clay. I trace the image onto the clay and the begin carving. What starts out as flat and uninspiring comes to life.
I have avoiding using color other than an iron oxide wash on my free standing sculptures, since it would distract from the form and feel of the sculpture. On the tiles bright under glaze colors enhance and help create the image.

Sculpting a squirrel is new for me and credit must be given to my dog, Freddie. He has been directing my attention to squirrels on our walks for two years now.

"Squirrel in the Tree" is made from Earthenware Clay and finished with Iron Oxide Wash and Under Glaze. The tile is 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1/2" in size. "Squirrel in the Tree" will add a splash of color and whimsy to any room, it can be placed on a book shelf, fire place mantle, or side table. The easel is included.
