This is an awesome vintage 1920s poster by Charles Mark Relyea (April 23, 1863 – 1932) who was an American illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and popular novels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Relyea was a native of Albany, New York, and spent most of his early years in Rochester. He studied art under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and under Frank Vincent DuMond at the Art Students League in New York City before completing his training in Paris.
This poster measures approx. 21" x 44". It features a painting Relyea did himself of John Paul Jones on the Delaware River reviewing two ships, the Alfred and the Columbia and two brigs the Andrea Doria and the Cabot, which John Paul Jones selected, by orders of a naval commission, as the foundation of the US Navy. At his suggestion, Congress, on December 13, 1775, also ordered thirteen frigates built.
John Paul Jones was a Scottish-American naval captain who was the United States' first well-known naval commander in the American Revolutionary War.
