Robin shows you how to shape your skeleton, bend the support rod, and how to shape and attach her hat and skirt. Robin used the 16" kit as an example in videos and has created the following profile sheet to go with it to help get the support rod correct and how much to flesh her out. We have tried to give you as much help as possible to make it as easy as we can for you to make your Whimsy. you can however do the same process with the 8" kit (however the profile sheet only applies to the 16" bundle).

Craft Kits
This kits provides all the materials necessary for a wire sculpture enthusiast to follow the book/video tutorials and make their very own wire sculpture. We have been sure to include more than enough wire within this kit so please don't worry about running out or feel you need to use it all. The tools your need to create your sculpture are also included with the kit. If you have these tools already and feel as though you don't need them, or you have already purchased our craft kits before and just want the skeleton, wire and book then you can select to not included them with the options above (see contents below).
Robin of FantasyWire has always shared how he makes his fairies. He has written a comprehensive instruction book “The Art of FantasyWire" which is designed to share the secrets behind the creation of the FantasyWire fairies. The 16" kit has been designed to complement the book 'The Art of FantasyWire which is included in the 16" kit. The 8" kit also comes with an instruction booklet just a simpler version. There are also a whole playlist of Video tutorials to help talk you through the entire process of wire sculpting (see below).
The “The Art of FantasyWire" book will walk you through;
The properties and constraints of working with wire
The factors that influence a good design in art
How to make a wire skeleton/frame to support your sculpture (not that you will need to make a skeleton this time as one is included in this kit for you)
Basic wire handling techniques
Guidelines and insights to help you control proportions (the hardest part of any art)
What to do when you start to panic if you think its all going wrong!
The pre-formed skeleton included within this kit is already proportioned and anatomically set for you. Just simply adapt it to whichever fairy pose you wish to sculpt and apply retailer the wire.
The different types of wire included are to;
Build out the figure
Add detail and skin
Finish by adding the wings and hair
You start with the skeleton then apply the thickest wire working down to the thinest. All of these steps are walked through in the instructions

Fairy Hat
Whimsy as you can see from the photos has a Hat. These look fantastic against the stainless steel fairies as the copper breaks up the colour of the steel and really adds to the sculptures.
We have made the skirts and hats the appropriate sizes to accompany our craft kits. So depending on which of our craft kit you have chosen you will get the following sized accessories:
8″ Craft Kit = Small Skirt/Hat
16″ Craft Kit = Large Skirt/Hat
What you will also see from the photos is that the hats will arrive to you laser cut ready but flat. This means that some craft work is required to prepare the hat for your sculpture. As with everything else we do, we provide as much advise and information as we can to help everyone to learn this craft. So of course we have a video tutorial to talk you through how to add the detailing to the hat and attach it to your sculpture (see playlist above). There are a few things you will require to shape your hat ready for your sculpture; a hammer, a pair of pliers, some wire and a surface to hammer on. (not included)
Fairy Skirt
Whimsy also has a skirt, and same as with the hat this will come in the appropriate size for the kit you have chosen. As you can see from the photos the front of the skirts are left open, this is true with Robin's fairies skirts also. Of course not every 8″/16″ tall fairy sculpture has exactly the same sized waist and the skirts are designed to allow room for adjustment to fit your sculpture.
What you will also see from the photos the skirts will arrive to you laser cut ready but flat. This means that some craft work is required to prepare the skirt for your sculpture. As with our everything else we do, we provide as much advise and information as we can to help everyone to learn this craft. So of course we have a video tutorial to talk you through how to add the detailing to the skirt and attach it to your sculpture. There are a few things you will require to shape your skirt ready for your sculpture; a hammer, a screwdriver/rod (to hammer in the lines, our sculpture rods in our shop work great!), and surface to hammer on. (not included)
Fairy Wish/Dandelion
This is a handmade wire sculpture of a single dandelion seed (commonly known as a Fairy Wish) made out of stainless steel wire. It is already made for you. These can either be a beautifully delicate ornament as a standalone piece, or you can transform one of these wishes into a dandelion. Robin has made a video tutorial on how to transform your fairy wish into a dandelion (see playlist above).
The fairy wishes are available in two sizes, either small or large and again depending on which size of our craft kits you have chosen you will get the following sized wish:
Approximate sizes:
8″ Craft Kit = Small: 7 inches (18cm) long x 4 inches (10cm) diameter.
16″ Craft Kit = Large: 23.5 inches (60cm) x 8 inches (20cm) diameter.
FYI: the branded tubes in the photos are only available with the small option just make you aware if you are purchasing as a gift. The large option comes in a plain tube.
To blow on a dandelion while making a wish carries your wish on the wind. The significance of the dandelion is that it is so good at spreading seeds far and wide which have the ability to take root in the harshest of conditions, adding weight to the idea that your wish has a good chance of surviving.
Sculpture Support Rod
A common question that we receive is “how do you get our fairies to stand on one leg?”, the answer is a supporting rod. So Whimsy needs one of these rods to do it.
Again depending on which size of our craft kits you have chosen you will get the following sized rod:
8″ Craft Kit = Small Rod (20cm)
16″ Craft Kit = Large Rod (40cm)
If you choose the 16″ kits then you can simply bend the rod to match your skeletons pose then use some wire to attach the rod. If you have the 8″ kits then you can do the same and bend the rod to match your skeleton then use some wire to attach the rod. With this size skeleton though we would recommend that you unravel the chosen leg/arm that your sculpture will stand on, and use the rod to replace that limb.
Video Tutorials
We have a "How To" playlist on our YouTube channel which is Robin Wight explaining in detail every step of how to create a wire sculpture, from the design process through to how to apply the wire. It is definitely worth a watch as it will show you how to create the sculpture you want. We try to give you as much support as we can, with our kits and tutorials you should be able to create something you are very proud of. You can see below a little intro video of the tutorials to give you an idea of what they are about: https://youtu.be/Pfby0VtKZp8
Good Art Flows From Good Design
Art is always portrayed as some form of mystery created by the the talents given to a lucky few, but good art flows from good design. Design may also be a creative process, but its much easier to apply rules to design. Rules can be followed and the with the aid of some step-by-step design and wire techniques, most people who enjoy crafts should be able to enjoy designing and making their own wire fairy.
Whilst FantasyWire is best known for fairies and dandelions, this book aims to share the underlining principles of design and wire sculpture which could be applied to any sculptural subject. You don't have to be into fairies to benefit from the contents of 'The Art of FantasyWire'!
Our social media pages are a great place to look for inspiration. We also love to receive pictures of fairy sculptures completed using our kits, so please feel free to send them over. Happy sculpting!
