Jewelry retailer Box Superb Vintage Decoupage Box Book Shape Velvet Lined

A beautiful decoupage box in the shape of a book with a print of a Mother and Child on the top. retailer The box has brass decorative corners, a piano hinge, and a brass latch. The person who made this item spent a lot of time as the picture is expertly embedded beneath many layers of varnish so that the edges are barely felt. I have seen a few of these pieces that are properly done and they have a beauty unmatched by anything made commercially. The layers of varnish have been meticulously wet sanded between coats creating a velvety smooth finish. This was a popular midcentury craft and only a few did it right. The background of the print blends into the black finish of the box more so in person than in the photos, the lighting accentuates the difference.

The varnish has cracked in places over the years. I happen to find that quality attractive and it is very common in many layers of varnish.

Measures 9" x 6" x 2" and the interior is 3/4" deep on both sides.
