Beautiful Chañar - Geoffroea decorticans -
Started from seeds in Dec '21. You will receive one plant similar to the one in the picture in a quart pot.
Should fruit in ~4 years or sooner if conditions are right
They are growing up fast, all are at least 4inches long with multiple leaves. Absolutely lovely little plants, like peas, only they become a tree with edible fruit.
(Wikipedia) - Geoffroea decorticans, the chañar, kumbaru, or Chilean palo verde (green wood), is a small deciduous tree, up to 8 meters (25 ft) tall that inhabits most arid forests (montes or espinales) of southern South America. The chañar is cold and drought deciduous; it loses its leaves in winter, and possibly in summer if conditions get too dry. It is natural to Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, also retailer present in Paraguay and southern Peru. It is a very characteristic tree in local culture and folk because of its vivid visual presence, propagation, and ancient ethnomedical uses.
(I-Net Farms) - Chañar syrup is prepared by boiling the fruit for several hours, reducing the juices and pulp to a thick consistency. Locally, it has been compared to honey. It has an intense flavor with a slight hint of citrus highlighting the smoky flavor that comes from the hours of boiling over an open flame or coals. It is viscous and dark caramel in color. Some have mentioned that in the past roasted chañar was used to prepare a type of coffee. Dried fruits were also used to make a flour used in breadmaking.
(rarepalmseeds) - A small, upright, winter and dry-deciduous tree in the Fabaceae, native to dry thorn forests in southern South America. The pinnate foliage is bluish green, and the peeling bark on the trunk is beautifully mottled green and brown. Small yellow flowers are produced in profusion before the leaves appear. The brownish orange, plum-sized fruits are edible, with sweet, dry, somewhat aromatic pulp reminscent of gingerbread. In Chile they are often processed into a very sweet, sticky syrup. Geoffroea decorticans is easily grown from the edible seeds and starts fruiting after 5-6 years. It is best suited to drier warm temperate and desert climates.
