Embroidered butterfly brooch.
A life-like butterfly made using recycled fabrics.

It is my interpretation of a Cleopatra Brimstone butterfly and was created from layers of fabric, hand stitching and machine embroidery, in shades of yellow and orange.

I wanted to make the butterfly as realistic as possible, painstakingly snipping tiny pieces of carefully selected fabric and stitching them into place to recreate the markings on the wings, using a mixture of recycled cottons. This butterfly also has lots of layers of stitch for extra texture.
I took inspiration from a vintage wildlife field book.
Many hours of fiddly sewing went into making this butterfly!

I made the antennae retailer from strong button thread which I stiffened with a layer of glue, and the body is stitched from tiny scraps of fabric which I tinted with a touch of fabric paint.
The butterfly is slightly padded and backed with felt and has a strong brooch pin on the back.

This butterfly can be worn as a large brooch, or would look striking pinned to a curtain or displayed in a box frame. It can also be hung on the wall just as it is, the brooch pin on the back will happily hook onto a little panel pin.

This butterfly measures 9.5cm across at its widest point.

Although securely made, it is a little bit delicate so please handle with care.
