These genuine handmade fabric wallets are designed and sewn in the Chiapan Highlands of Mexico. The loom embroidered fabric inlaid on each side is done by the Tzotzil Mayan people of Zinacantán.

Zinacantán is Nahuatl for "Place of Bats" (Spanish: "Lugar de Murciélagos", Tzotzil: "Sots'leb"). Despite this name the pueblo is better known as a place of beautiful textiles. Zinacantán fabrics, including the ones on this bag, are handmade on looms in the home, typically by the women and girls of the community. The unique, contrasting, bright patterns on each side could very well be a material example of mother-daughter cooperation, embodying the perpetuation of tradition.
