An retailer authentic Kievan Rus Viking penannular brooch or fibula over 500 years old in very good and wearable condition from Lake Ladoga. Beautiful uncleaned and conserved, excellent condition. This is a Norse area and important part of a major Medieval trade route, and is the largest lake in Europe. This bronze penannular brooch is in the Omega category of brooches very popular with the Viking. Penannular fibulae are one of the three classes of fibulae; the other two classes are bow fibulae (class B) and plate fibulae (class C). Penannular means of an incomplete ring form. Penannular fibula use a rotary fastener pin. Ring and omega brooches held the fabric pieces together in a completely different way than the other fibulae closure constructions. The cloth was pierced at the desired location. The needle tip was passed between the ends of the ring. The ring was then rotated 90 degrees under the needle tip. The fabric pressed the needle on the hanger and kept the fibula closed. This brooch measuring a huge nearly 3 inches, and the condition is solid (including the original pin). The design is the coiled fibula styling seen under the influence of the Scandinavian Rus. This wonderfully preserved totally original artifact is offered with only a light cleaning to expose the original patination. The original pin is intact and very stable. This can be worn today without concern. As with all my antiquities this comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and lifetime money back guarantee; so buy with confidence!!
