Petrified retailer Wood Slab, Fossil Slice

This is a gorgeous slab of petrified wood. Petrified wood is wood that has been fossilized by different minerals turning it to stone. As the wood decays, mineral rich solutions fill the gaps in the wood where they harden and crystallize. This process continues until all of the wood has decayed and retailer been replaced by minerals.

The colors you see in petrified wood come from the different trace minerals for in the quartz and chalcedony crystals that replaced the wood. These minerals are often iron oxide, hydrated iron oxides, manganese oxides, and carbon.
