Product code: The retailer Oculus Ribs - study #3 New York - Architecture Abstracts

The Santiago Calatrava designed World Trade Center Transportation hub in New York City was unveiled in 2014. Commonly called The Oculus, it has been described many different ways. I see steel wings reaching up from the ribs that form the central hall. It's a space that defies any traditional form of architecture, but then doesn't all of Calatrava's work? These shots were taken when it was newly opened on a stark winter day, both early and late in the day. Light transforms this building into many things, depending on time of day or night or external weather conditions.

Architecture can be looked at in so many ways. I choose to see the details, the shapes and negative space the architect has created. I have always been interested in the use of negative space as a design element. Architects start with empty space, then create a solid form that fills the air above us, the land around us. Each creation is a unique shape and form that fills space but leaves sky, ground, and areas between buildings to allow their design to be seen.
