Birch retailer Vase

Birch vase - slight flute rising to a dramatic ridge of broken wood fibres. The inside tapers down to a narrow bore suitable for accepting dried flowers, grasses and similar light ornament.
A standing tree trunk in a garden, on one side the fibres had sheared, storm damage or high winds - could this be why the tree was cut down - and on drying the wood had split lengthwise to the pith, so sections could be removed. The top edge of this vase preserves the contour created when the trunk cracked. The decorative patterning and texture the effect of extensive worm activity. Dark areas in two places near the rim - one shows the outside of the trunk and one showing the oxidised wood exposed by a drying split.
Finished direct from the cutting tools to preserve detail and a food safe oil applied.
Turned dry.
Wood provided by a local household who on moving in removed the trunk from their back retailer garden.
