Description

Product Name: Art Deco-Early 1930s- Champleve Enamel Griffins retailer with Pressed Celluloid Flowers 2.25”

This is a remarkable vintage brooch with all the bells and whistles of an authentic early 1930's design. The brooch is composed of aluminum alloy with stunning champleve enamel crafted in a well considered Art Deco style.

The design depicts a pair of white Griffins. These Griffins are complimented by a pale mint green enamel and accented with rich black detail. The center station is pressed green Celluloid. The Celluloid is a beautifully detailed mound of flowers; daisies, leaves and a magnificent dahlia.
It is a most unusual design, very vintage Deco.

This unique brooch is in lovely vintage condition measures 2.25” and has a working clasp. It will make a most unique accessory.

Some thoughts:
The origins of this brooch are in all likelihood German given the design composition and construction. When this brooch was made Germany produced Deco jewelry for the world market often incorporating pressed glass and pressed celluloid cabochons of this style.
Interestingly, this particular design incorporates a Griffin which was liberally employed in German decorative arts retailer for eons.
For example, the Griffin is found in the medieval heraldry of the German-Polish coastline of Pomerania.
In the late 1800's the German Griffin was employed in a myriad jewelry designs; sash pins, ribbon pins, pendants and watch fobs. It was considered a masculine symbol, and represented bravery and courage.
