The Arraiolos rugs are rugs embroidered with wool on jute or cotton canvas, traditional from the village of Arraiolos, in Portugal.

Rugs in Arraiolos stitch have been made in Portugal since the middle ages. Named for the town in central Portugal where they were originally made ("Arraiolos").
Arraiolos is a Portuguese village located in the district of Évora, Alentejo Region in Portugal where these rugs are made by Private artisans women from the region
The oldest references to the technique of making Arraiolos rugs date back to the end of the 15th century.
Early Arraiolos rugs utilized designs derived from the Persians by way of the Moors, from whom the Portuguese learned the craft.
They are embroidered in 100% pure wool over a jute canvas, in a slanted cross stitch with defined rules as to how to change direction etc.
The wool was traditionally dyed with natural dyes. As a result, antique rugs have aged beautifully and can be very valuable!
They grace retailer both palaces and small homes, and can be found as cushion covers, chair seats, wall hangings, small and large rugs, bags, etc.
