Welcome to Zeiss Galleries!

7 1/8" W x 8 3/4" H

This vintage lithograph reminds me so much of what I miss about my time living in Mexico City for a year! At many street corners, all of a sudden I'd come upon a niche or altar of a certain saint, usually a statue. And the way this is framed, wrapped up in tin, is very much retailer reminiscent of certain tin artefacts that Frida Kahlo collected. I probably visited her house about 10 times over the year (Trotsky's only once - man he really took the poverty thing seriously!) One of Frida's wall near a staircase was covered by folk paintings on tin, thanking a certain saint for curing any one of a variety of illnesses. They usually had a small story written on them also. Well, the tin on this piece reminds me of her style.

The altar pictured here is probably inside a house. It is portrayed as being framed by "azulejos," blue and white tiles. In Mexico City there is an entire house covered with these tiles, appropriately named "La Casa de Los Azulejos." Anyway...

The altar is to venerate Christ, with two candles burning, as is the Catholic tradition. On the other shelves are pictured beautiful pieces of red, yellow and blue pottery. The shelves are decorated by "papel picado," decorative paper streamers, usually cut by hand.

This lithograph is signed "Pindter"?, numbered and titled. On the back there is a business card showing it was purchased in Ixtapa, a resort town on the west coast of Mexico.

Want a little piece of "México lindo?" Purchase this today! I now ship in one day, so hopefully you'll receive it quickly!
