These two magnificent egg cups (or candlesticks), called "objects of poilus" (soldier) in France, are part of what is called "the craft of the trenches".
The art of the trenches, also called “Art du Poilu” or “Art des trenches” - Trench Art by English speakers - designates an activity of manual artistic creation and a popular art practiced - among others - by any man, in direct relation or indirectly with the armed conflict or its consequences. They are most often made while waiting in the trenches to give time.
This popular artisanal activity began during the War of 1870 and developed mainly in the trenches of World War I, the period of its heyday, and then in prison camps of World War II, to ward off boredom.

The manufacturing is meticulous, it is no longer just everyday objects that soldiers make but treasures of ingenuity to create real masterpieces.
