THE HISTORY OF LACQUER BROOCHES The first brooches and boxes with lacquer miniatures were brought into Russia in the 18th century from Western Europe. Russian merchant, P.V. Lukutin built a world famous factory in retailer the Fedoskino village, in Russia, were the industrial manufacturing of lacquer brooches was organized.
The early Russian artists used Western European art techniques to create their miniatures, portraying scenes of every day Russian life. Russian landscapes and finely made portraits are designs found on these collectible brooches painted in oils on papier-mache or mother-of-pearl. Modern day Russian artists continue to blend old traditional Russian art with new designs to create current classic masterpieces.
